Follow-up activity ideas - Reading


Year 5 Learning at Home
You have the opportunity to change your reading books once a week, but many of you can read them in a couple of sittings! Rather than quantity, we would like you to focus on quality reading that improves your vocabulary and your understanding of the world around you.
If you have finished your reading book, why not do one of the following? Remember to bring any work that you have done to school with you; we would love to see it! If you have any other ideas, don't forget to tell Mrs Ferguson!
Non Fiction
  • Create a fun fact sheet with all the amazing facts you have read. Try and include lots of key vocabulary!
  • Create a 'word cloud' (it's a bit like 'Scrabble', but you can control the letters you need!)
  • Make your own dictionary with all the new vocabulary you have found.
  • Draw what you have learnt!
  • Have a look at the school website and see if you can find a class who has a topic that links into the book that you have read. Why not go and speak to one of the children from that class at playtime?
  • Is your book historical? Why not make a timeline about the key events that you have read about?
  • Research The Discovery Museum and The Great North Museum (The Hancock). Have they got an exhibit about the thing you have read about?
  • Have a go at writing a script for a radio or TV broadcast for a programme about the topic you have read about.
  • Make something! Use recycling objects to try and make something you have been reading about.
  • Take a section of the story and make it into a play script - then you can act it out with your friends at break!
  • Turn your story into a cartoon.
  • Draw a feelings graph for the characters in the story. How do they change? How are they different?
  • Write an alternative ending to the story.
  • Can you write a section from a different character's perspective?
  • Write a book review for our Reading Corner at school.
  • Some of the best books make amazing films! Why not have a go at acting out some of your favourite scenes and recording it on a camera?
  • Find a piece of music that best summarises some of your story.
  • Have you come across some new vocabulary in your story? Make sure you have clarified it and then try and apply it in your own piece of writing.
  • Write a prequel (a story before your story took place!).
  • Write a sequel (a story after your story took place!).
  • Imagine one of the characters had a time machine. What decisions would they have made differently and why?
